Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has been appointed as the chief selector of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). He was handed the duty on Friday as the MCA believed he was the most suited man for the job. Agarkar has played First Class cricket for Mumbai for almost 17 years. Hence, it comes as no surprise to see taking over as the chairman of the selection committee for the state association.

As per the recent reports in the Indian Express, Ajit Agarkar will be chairman of the selection committee for the senior team as well as for the U23 team. He will head the panel of other selectors that comprises of three more administrators. Nilesh Kulkarni, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sunil More are the other three members in the panel headed by Agarkar.

For the U19 selection committee, Rajesh Pawar will be the chairman of selectors. Pawar will have three other members to assist him in the committee as well – Santosh Shinde, Raju Sutar, and former Indian cricketer Avishkar Salvi.

A look at Agarkar’s numbers

Talking about Ajit Agarkar, he has been a power performer for the Indian team. During the first half of the previous decade, Agarkar was a regular member in the Indian national team. Agarkar was a part of the Indian team that had won the ICC World T20 in 2007 in South Africa. He represented India in 191 ODIs and scalped 288 wickets. In the 28 Test matches that he played, he had 58 wickets under his belt.

Commenting on the Mumbai team, they are arguably the most consistent and the strongest team in the Indian domestic circuit. They have lifted the Ranji Trophy on most occasions in the history of the Indian domestic cricket. They had made it to the finals of the Ranji Trophy this season. Agarkar will surely have a big role to play to get greater laurels for the national setup.
