Mumbai likely to appoint Ramesh Powar as the new head coach
Sameer Dighe who coached Mumbai last season quit from the position due to personal reasons.
The Mumbai Ranji Trophy team, which is hands down the most successful team in the prestigious Indian domestic tournament is looking for a new head coach ahead of the 2018-19 domestic season. While there are quite a few prominent names in the race reports suggest that former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar is the frontrunner in the race for the position.
Three interview candidates have been shortlisted
Powar, Vinayak Samant and Pradeep Sundaram have been shortlisted as the candidates to be interviewed for the post. Due to his experience of having played 2 Tests and 31 ODIs for India, Powar seems to be the preferred candidate for the job. Reports further add that not many people showed interest in applying for the job, which is not what the Mumbai Cricket Association expected and were hoping to attract a lot of applicants.
Sameer Dighe was appointed as the head coach of Mumbai before 2017/18 season, and before him, the team had Chandrakant Pandit at the helm. Dighe, who played 6 Tests and 23 ODIs for India, resigned from his post last month due to personal reasons. Under him, the team’s performance was not at par with their own standards.
Great records by the Mumbai Team
The Mumbai team has won two Vijay Hazare trophies, 1 Syed Mushtaque Ali trophy and a whopping 41 Ranji trophy titles. It also has 14 Irani Cup titles, the most by any team. Mumbai has historically produced some of the best batsmen for India – the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sachin Tendulkar, Vijay Merchant, Polly Umrigar, Rohit Sharma and now budding talents like Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer.
A poor Ranji Trophy season last time means the Khadoos team will want to make the best choice in terms of coach and kick-start the season in October on a high.
