Zaheer Khan had been one of India’s greatest left-arm seamers to have played the game. He was equally efficient with both new and the old ball and ruffled the best batsmen in the business with his ability to make the ball do the talking. The cricketer has also successfully plied his trade for a number of teams in the Indian Premier League.
The Maharashtra-born cricketer hung his boots from international cricket in 2015. However, he kept playing in the Indian T20 league. Nevertheless, he also retired from the IPL after playing the ninth season. He was a player cum mentor when he represented the Delhi Daredevils in a couple of seasons of the cash-rich domestic tournament.
Zaheer – The mentor
He was also set to play the erstwhile season, however, withdrew his name from the auction. The pacer has recently joined the Mumbai South franchise as a mentor in the upcoming Mumbai T20 League. Zaheer’s first assignment will be the South’s opening game against Mumbai North East in the day’s second game at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The left-arm seamer was also elected as the bowling consultant of the national team, but the contract never came into existence. Zaheer has recently been seen as a commentator and is currently a member of the panel in the ongoing Nidahas Trophy featuring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He has also commentated during India’s tour of Sri Lanka and the Windies last year.
The cricketer is one of the most experienced mentors in the Mumbai T20 League. Nonetheless, the tournament might pose challenges for the former Indian seamer as it is his maiden event as a mentor. However, Mumbai South would be privileged to play under the tutelage of Zak. The tournament starts today and opening game will be played between Triumph Knights and Sobo Supersonics.
