Mummy se puchke aaya hai: Wasim Akram told Sachin after his debut
The young Indian batsman was at the receiving end with both, ball and sledging.
Sachin Tendulkar was only 16 years old when he made his International debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989. He had already made quite a name for himself in cricketing circles at the age-group level that he made his debut soon after getting out of school. The opposition he was up against, on the other hand, was loaded with seasoned fast bowlers, the fast and furious Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis and they were known to hunt in packs.
The young Indian batsman was at the receiving end with both, ball and sledging. Recent, Akram on a talk show Salaam Cricket 2018, spoke about his confrontation with Tendulkar for the first time. Even though both cricketing greats have massive respect and admiration for each other, things were different back then. The Indian made his debut as a 16-year-old however, after meeting him Akram thought that he looked 14.
“We had read about Sachin…. that there’s a sensation coming.. a 16-year old. But when he came (out to bat), he looked 14 years old and I told him, “mummy se puchke aaya hai?” (Did you ask your mother before coming?), Wasim said.
The crowd that had come to see 11 legends – Akram, Sunil Gavaskar, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdul Qadir, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammad Azharuddin, R Ashwin, Habibul Bashar, Muttiah Muralitharan and Madan Lal, share the same stage, got ecstatic with the story of Akram mocking Tendulkar.

There was never a dull moment in the Salaam Cricket 2018 show. The Turbanator also lit up the audience by sharing his memories. “Wasim bhai was my hero and it was my third fourth Test match but playing against him was a huge thing, I was scared to bat against him. But somehow I touched my bat to his ball and it went for four. On his way back, he was like “teri…” and I was like… “Paaji, galti ho gai,” recollected Harbhajan.
The show had so many great stories and memories that the crowd was left wanting for more at the end of the show. It was simply a blockbuster.
