Mushfiqur Rahim shares a picture of Tendulkar and Lara on Twitter; calls them ‘living legends’
Bangladesh will play their first game at the World Cup against South Africa at the Oval on June 2.
Bangladesh wicket-keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim made a comeback after a month’s break on Sunday when he batted at the National Cricket Academy in Mirpur, Dhaka. The former Bangladesh captain returned from New Zealand with his team following the deadly terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch on March 16 that left 50 people dead. The Bangladesh team had a close shave that day as it was approaching one of the targeted mosques minutes before the gunman went berserk.
The 31-year-old diminutive cricketer, who played in three ODIs in the New Zealand tour but could not score many, has also been suffering from a rib injury. His fitness is key for the Bangladesh side that will compete in the upcoming ICC World Cup kicking off in England on May 30.
Musfiqur on Sunday also shared on Twitter a picture of former greats Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara both of whom are in India at the moment, thanks to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). While Tendulkar is the icon player of the Mumbai Indians, Lara is in India for the job of an analyst in connection to the tournament.
‘Two all-time living legends’
Mushfiqur captioned the photo saying: “Two all time living legends together” to describe the two contemporaries who scored over 56,000 runs in international cricket together. The two former batsmen also have 153 international centuries to their credits, with Tendulkar having scored 100.
Mushfiqur, who has over 10,000 runs in international cricket, started strength practice on Thursday and his return will give some relief to the Bangladesh selectors ahead of picking the squad for the WC.
Bangladesh will play their first game at the World Cup against South Africa at the Oval on June 2. Their best result at the quadrennial event is making the quarter-finals which they did in the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand. Bangladesh are also concerned over the fitness of some of their other top players ahead of the mega tournament.
