Australian off spinner Nathan Lyon clearly grabbed the limelight in the first half of Day-2’s play with his incredible spell of 7 wickets for 94 runs. The heroics of the right arm bowler saw the Bangladeshis get restricted to a total of 305 runs which paved the way for the Australian batting. As usual, Vice-captain David Warner opened the innings for the Kangaroos with young partner Matt Renshaw.
The main story:
The Aussies were hit with an early blow as Mustafizur Rahman drew first blood for Bangladesh. In a delivery that went completely wrong and down the leg side of the left-handed Renshaw, saw the Aussies lose their first wicket. Renshaw edged the ball which raced past his leg side leading to a jaw-dropping catch from Bangladeshi skipper and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
The 23-year-old batsman was left speechless by the incredible athleticism of the wicketkeeper as Rahim stretched himself to the full to take a one handed blinder. The wicket came in the second over of the Australian batting as Renshaw made the long walk back to the pavilion after scoring 4 runs off 7 balls.
The wicket brought skipper Steve Smith on to the crease and he gelled beautifully with David Warner to lead the Australian revival act. After a partnership of 93 runs, Smith departed for a score of 58 falling victim to Taijul Islam. In a sheer example of lack of concentration, the fidgety right hander got cleaned bowled between the massive gap between his bat and pad. David Warner continues to play a gutsy knock at the crease with Peter Handscomb providing brilliant support.
The Bangladeshis lead the two-match series 1-0 after pulling off a historic win over the Australians in the first Test at Dhaka. It marked the first ever Test victory for the Tigers over the mighty Aussies riding on a brilliant all-round show from Shakib Al Hasan.
