Virat Kohli is known as the chase master for a reason. He loves gunning down totals and has won India so many games while batting second. Very few have forgotten his knocks against Australia in 2013 series when the team chased down scores in excess of 350 twice in three matches. Also, his unbeaten 82-run knock against the same team in the T20 World Cup 2016 was absolutely sublime and is often remembered.
Another aspect of Kohli’s batting while chasing is that he is always pumped up. It is like that he has got a point to prove to someone or the other every time and lets a roar out after winning the game. The India skipper, on Monday, revealed from where does he get the extra motivation.
He went live with Tamim Iqbal on his Facebook page where the Bangladesh opener asked him about the same. And Virat Kohli hilariously said that the constant chatter behind the stumps from the wicket-keepers like Mushfiqur Rahim pumps him up to do well every time he takes the field. “Process is simple. Sometimes the likes of Mushy will help too by saying something from behind the stumps and then I get extra motivation,” he said.
Virat Kohli feels having confidence is crucial while chasing
Giving more insights on his mindset while chasing the totals, Virat Kohli told Tamim that a player should have the belief to chase down any kind of totals. He recalled his younger days when he used to feel that he would’ve won India the games which the team lost at that time. The 31-year-old also stated that he likes the situation where he knows how many runs his side needs to win.
“You have to have the confidence that you can do it. I always tell the youngsters that they need to have the confidence that they can do it. When I was young, I used to watch the matches and I used to be convinced that the matches India did not win, I would have been able to win those matches. I went to bed with that kind of feeling.
“So, when I am in such a situation [chasing], there is that joy that comes out. That pure intent, I mean. Chasing has a very clear scenario where you know how many runs you need to get and what you need to do to attain that. Even when you need 370 or 380, I feel like it’s gettable,” Kohli further added.
