‘Muttiah Muralitharan is making these amazing calls’ – Dale Steyn reveals story behind celebrating Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal off Umran Malik

Umran Malik unleashed a fiery spell during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s seven-wicket triumph over Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022. The right-arm speedster spitted venom as he registered figures of 2/27 in his quota of four overs. During the course of his spell, he also cleaned up KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer with a fiery yorker. While Umran was evidentially ecstatic with the dismissal, Dale Steyn and Muttiah Muralitharan were also spotted celebrating animatedly in the dug-out.

Apparently, the two bowling coaches hugged each other after Umran got the wicket and the video of the same went viral on social media. Following SRH’s comfortable win, Steyn revealed the story behind the celebrations. The former South African speedster revealed that Muralitharan reckoned Umran should bowl a yorker against Shreyas as the latter was clearing his stumps.

However, he and the team’s head coach Tom Moody were of the opinion that Umran will be smashed down the ground if he goes for a yorker. However, as it turned out a Umran Malik yorker pierced Shreyas’ defenses, igniting celebrations in the camp.

“I’m not going to lie to you. Sometimes, the players’ genius comes out. Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) actually said that he thinks the perfect ball to bowl right now is a yorker. Tom (Moody) and I turned around and said, ‘no, if he bowls a yorker now, he is going to be hit for a four over his head’. He runs in, bowls a yorker, and knocks the stumps out of the ground! So, honestly, what do I know?” Steyn said after the match.

“The genius is in the players, guys. They have to do what they have to do, and when they have to do it I just jumped into Murali! I was like, “you are a spin bowling coach and now you are making these amazing calls,” he added. Meanwhile, Malik has been getting regular chances despite going for heavy runs. Steyn, however, made it clear that the young bowler will be backed as he has been asked to not compromise with his pace.
