Navjot Sidhu and Kapil Dev to grace their presence in Imran Khan's oath-taking ceremony
Both Sidhu and Kapil had played cricket with Imran during the 80s and 90s.
The general elections in Pakistan took place on July 25 and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, headed by the enigmatic former Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan, comprehensively won the same by defeating Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML). Khan retired from international cricket after captaining the national team to glory in the 1992 World Cup in Down Under.
He formed the party in 1996 and hasn’t looked back ever since by any stretch of the imagination. Imran’s party garnered 116 seats in the 272-member National Assembly, however, they can’t form a government as the numbers required are 137 in order to do the same. Following the triumph, the 65-year-old veteran was also crowned as the Honourable Prime Minister of the nation.
A star-studded oath ceremony?
Initially, his oath-taking ceremony was scheduled to take place on August 11. The date has now been postponed to August 18 after the Pakistan National Assembly convenes on August 13. The Pakistan foreign ministry confirmed that they won’t be inviting any foreign dignitaries and VVIPs. Meanwhile, PTI revealed that former Indian players in Kapil Dev and Navjot Sidhu will attend the ceremony.
Both Sidhu and Kapil had played cricket with Imran during the 80s and 90s. Moreover, it was also learned that former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar and Bollywood actor was also invited by PTI, but confirmations haven’t been received from their part. Meanwhile, Khan’s party has taken support from Independents and other parties to reach the number of 137.
Khan’s cricketing career was glorious, to say the least. He made his international debut in 1971 and his career spanned a whopping 21 years. He was equally efficient with both bat and ball. He scored 3807 and 3709 runs in Tests and ODIs. Moreover, the veteran approximately has 550 wickets. He also has 24 five-wicket hauls in his career and was a tormenting factor for opponents.
