New South Wales captain and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has been ruled out of the Australian domestic one-day tournament. The 32-year old sustained the injury on Monday while batting in the nets at the WACA ahead of NSW’s opening fixture against Western Australia. In Nevill’s absence, Kurtis Patterson will take on captaincy duties, while Sydney Thunder wicketkeeper Jay Lenton has been roped in to don the gloves.
However, Nevill suggested that the thumb will not require surgery and that he will travel with the side during the first few games of the tournament. The New South Wales camp is hoping Nevill will be back on the field by the time the Sheffield Shield gets underway in mid-October.
Nevill worked hard during the off-season: coach Phil Jaques
NSW coach Phil Jaques was rather disappointed with the news, he said the 32-year-old had put in a lot of hard work ahead of the season, and that his presence will be missed on the field.
“It’s never ideal to lose your skipper on the eve of the tournament,” Jaques said. “Nev has put in a lot of hard work throughout the off-season and he will be sorely missed. It’s a great opportunity for Kurtis. We named him vice-captain at the start of the pre-season, and that was a well-deserved appointment for Kurtis. It will be great for him to step up and get some experience in the captaincy role. It’s a good opportunity for Jay to put his name forward and play a role in the. We know that Jay is a very good player and he will do a good job in Nev’s absence.”
New South Wales weren’t the only side with injury woes ahead of the JLT One-Day Cup. Tasmania’s star all-rounder James Faulkner has also been ruled out with an injured calf. He picked up the injury while playing for Lancashire in the Vitality Blast on Saturday. Gurinder Sandhu has been called in as Faulkner’s replacement.
