Pakistan veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi hoped that the brand new concept of T1o league would avail bilateral cricketing ties between India and Pakistan. Afridi commended the organizers of the tournament for bringing in the two nations closer.
India last featured in the bilateral series against Pakistan back in 2012. Since then, the two nations have only met in the major ICC tournaments. India has not opted to play with their neighbours due to the complex diplomatic relationship between the two nation.
BCCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the PCB back in 2014 where the two nations were scheduled to play 6 bilateral series between the period of 2015-2023. Failing to honour the MOU, PCB has sued the Indian cricketing board and claimed a compensation of USD 1 Million.
Cricket should be kept away from politics: Afridi
Lookin at the recent developments, things have gone from bad to worse between the two nation but Afridi believes that sport is the one thing which may help the two nation bring back closer. The former Pakistani all-rounder stressed on the fact that politics should be kept distant from cricket.
“It is very good sign that a few Indian players will be coming here (to UAE). Pakistan and India are currently not playing together for political reasons but sport brings countries together. This is a very good sign that Pakistani and Indian teams will play against each other,” claimed Shahid Afridi according to Sports 360.
“We can only try. This is the good thing the franchisees are trying to do. Media should also play a positive role in ensuring cricket is kept away from politics. Sports is the only thing that brings countries closer. Players from both sides want to play each other. I will never understand why and how politics comes in between all this,” concluded the star player.
