The 2023 World Cup is upon us as ten competitive teams battle it out for the elusive and coveted trophy. The 16th edition of the global tournament kicked off with a clash between cricket's newest rivals England (ENG) and New Zealand (NZ) on Thursday, October 05th in Ahmedabad where the Kiwis took revenge in style by defeating Jos Buttler's side by nine wickets.
Notably, both sides played out one of the most epic ODI matches ever in the final of the last edition in 2019 at Lord's. The home side England won a thrilling encounter on a boundary count after even the Super Over got tied. Eoin Morgan and his men went on to lift their maiden ODI WC trophy as Kane Williamson and his Kiwi side suffered a heartbreak.
The BlackCaps have always been consistent in ICC events as they also reached the summit clash in the 2015 campaign under the stewardship of aggressive captain and opening batter Brendon McCullum. The New Zealanders will look to go one step further this time around and finally break their trophy drought.
The Kiwis faced the Afghanistan (AFG) test in Match No. 16 of the WC on Wednesday, October 18th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where the BlackCaps continued their red-hot form with fourth successive victory in the 2023 edition. Led by Tom Latham, the runners-up from the last two editions thrashed the Afghans by a huge margin of 149 runs. With this win, they topped the table with a healthy net run rate and are just looking unstoppable at the moment.
