New Zealand’s winning streak against Bangladesh at home continues as they defeated the visiting team by an innings and 52-run margin. Tamim Iqbal’s 126 in the first innings put Bangladesh on top in the first session before they collapsed to 234. Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten double century after a record partnership between Jeet Raval (132) and Tom Latham (161).

The pair added 254 runs for the first wicket to help New Zealand touch the 700-run mark for the first time in Test cricket. Tamim once again gave a good start scoring 74 but Bangladesh were four down for 126. Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah scored 149 and 146 respectively with a 235-run stand for the 5th wicket. However, they lost their last six wickets for 68 runs and were bowled out for 429.

All the major stats and numbers recorded during the first Test match between New Zealand and Bangladesh:

Not so proud record for Bangladesh:

1 – Bangladesh became the first team to lose a Test match by an innings margin despite three players scoring a century. Tamim Iqbal (126), Soumya Sarkar (149) and Mahmudullah (146) scored tons for the visitors in this game. Only five times before a team lost a Test despite three players scoring centuries for them.

A game of high scores:

6 – As many as six players scored 125+ in an innings in this Test match; the most such scores in any Test. The Windies-South Africa game in 2006 at the St John’s is the other game with six individual scores of 125.

A new record for New Zealand:

715/6 – The total of 715/6 is the highest for the Blackcaps in Test cricket. In fact, this is the first time that they have made more than 700 in a Test inning. Their previous highest Test total was 690/10 against Pakistan in the 2014 Sharjah Test.

2 – Only the 2nd time each of New Zealand’s top three scored hundreds in a Test inning. The Kiwis’ top three scored tons during innings of the 2003 Mohali Test match against India.

Tamim hands a good start for Bangladesh:

200 – Tamim Iqbal is only the 2nd Asian player to aggregate 200+ while opening the innings against the Kiwis in New Zealand. Pakistan’s Sadiq Mohammad aggregated 234 runs during the 1973 Wellington Test as an opener.

3 – Tamim’s 100-ball century in the first innings was his 3rd Test hundred coming in 100 or fewer deliveries. Mominul Haque is the only other player to score Test hundreds for Bangladesh in 100 or lesser balls.

A record partnership in loss:

235 – The 235-run partnership between Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah is the 2nd highest partnership by any pair to result in an innings defeat. Johnny Bairstow and David Malan added 237 also for the 5th wicket in the 2017 Perth Test against Australia.

235 – The partnership of 235 runs between Sarkar and Mahmudullah is also the 2nd highest stand in the 2nd innings of a Test resulting in a defeat. Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer added 242 for the opening wicket in Australia’s 2nd innings of the 2003 St John’s Test against the Windies.

Williamson set benchmarks for New Zealand:

6065 – Kane Williamson became the 4th player to score over 6000 runs in Test cricket and the fastest among them taking 126 innings. He also became the first New Zealand player to hit 20 Test hundreds as Martin Crowe and Ross Taylor are tied at 2nd spot with 17 tons.

Not many loose runs:

1378 – The match aggregate of 1378 runs is the highest without a run coming via bye in a Test match. The previous highest aggregate in a Test match without a run coming via bye was 1299 runs during the 1996 St John’s Test between Windies and New Zealand.

1.23 – Percentage of the runs scored in this game coming via extras; the lowest in any Test match with an aggregate of 1000+ runs. Only 17 of the 1378 runs scored in this game were extras. The 1953 Port of Spain Test between Windies and India had only 1.39% of runs in extras as the 1291 runs scored during the game involved only 18 extra runs.

A happy hunting ground for Mahmudullah:

4 – Four out of seven centuries in International cricket for Mahmudullah came while playing against New Zealand including three at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. At this venue, Mahmudullah scored 464 runs across six innings in Internationals; the most by any visiting player.
