Bangladesh and New Zealand are set to lock horns in the second game of the two-match Test series on Sunday, January 9 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The Tigers, captained by Mominul Haque Showrabh, have made an incredible start to their campaign. Defying every possible odd, the vising team defeated the Black Caps by eight wickets in the opening encounter in Mount Maunganui.

Mominul’s men didn’t make a great start to the encounter as Devon Conway kept them at bay. But from the third session onwards in the first day, Bangladesh started getting a foothold back into the contest. Although none of their batters scored a century, collective efforts helped them to a massive first innings lead. From there on Ebadot Hossain ran riot and broke the back of the Kiwis innings.

But prior to the second game, the Tigers have been jolted with a blow as young batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been ruled out due to a finger injury. It was Najmul Hossain Shanto, who opened alongside Shadman Islam during Bangladesh’s run-chase. The Tom Latham-led Black Caps, in the meantime, are under immense pressure, having already lost the chance of winning the Test series.

The hosts must be worried about their batting that couldn’t bear the brunt of the Bangladesh bowlers. Conway, Ross Taylor and Will Young did reasonably well, but the rest of their batters flattered to deceive. Even in the bowling department, New Zealand looked rusty. It remains to be seen how the home team makes a comeback after the loss at the Bay Oval earlier this week.

Playing combination for NZ vs BAN

New Zealand

Rachin Ravindra didn’t contribute a whole lot in the previous Test match and hence, the Black Caps may think about giving Daryl Mitchell a chance. The pace quartet of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson need to be on top of their game. Skipper Latham looked out of sorts last time around and he will have to find a way to get his rhythm back

Predicted XI: Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Ross Taylor, Tom Blundell, Rachin Ravindra/Daryl Mitchell, Kyle Jamieson, Neil Wagner, Tim Southee, Trent Boult

Bangladesh

The Tigers are most likely to give Mohammad Naim a chance to open the batting with Shadman. Although Naim doesn’t have a lot of first-class experience, he has been a prolific run-scorer in limited-overs cricket. Liton Das, time and again, has shown how good a player he is in the whites. Ebadot Hossain will be looking to replicate his performance from the previous encounter.

Predicted XI: Shadman Islam, Mohammad Naim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain
