Days ahead of the all-important ICC World Cup, New Zealand suffered a big setback on Monday when their talismanic skipper Kane Williamson had to be taken to the hospital. Williamson had injured his shoulder while fielding on day three of the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh. Fortunately, he came to bat later that day as well as on the fourth day on Monday but the grimace on his face made it clear that he was under pain.

In fact, he was twice attended by the medical staff as he came on to bat. He, however, overcame the pain barrier to score his fiftieth half-century in Tests before being dismissed on 74 by Taijul Islam. He then soon left the stadium and headed to the hospital. A team staff described the step to take Williamson for scans as a ‘precautionary’ measure. New Zealand will be desperately hoping that nothing serious comes out in the scans.

Williamson is their batting mainstay and will be pivotal to their chances in the showpiece event in England and Wales, starting on May 30. Prior to the World Cup, Williamson will also ply his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting on March 23.

New Zealand on top:

New Zealand, meanwhile, are in the driver’s seat in the game despite the first two days being completely washed out. In the first innings, the hosts bowled out Bangladesh for just 211. Neil Wagner was the pick of the bowlers with his four-wicket haul while Trent Boult picked up three. In reply, New Zealand declared their innings on 432 for 6.

The hosts had a disastrous start to their innings as their openers Jeet Raval (3) and Tom Latham (4) were dismissed cheaply. But afterward, it was just one-way traffic.  Williamson combined with Ross Taylor (195) to post 172 runs for the second wicket and steadied the ship before the latter added 216 runs for the fourth wicket with Henry Nicholls (107). Taylor went on to complete his double century before being dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman.
