New Zealand vs England, 2018: 2nd Test, Day 2 – Statistical Highlights
All the stats and numbers from the second day’s play of the Christchurch Test match.
England’s experienced opening pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson ran through New Zealand’s top order after they posted 307 in their first innings. Jonny Bairstow completed his 5th Test century before his team lost their last two wickets for 17 runs on the 2nd day morning. The Broad-Anderson sent back the hosts’ top five for just 36 runs on the board. However, BJ Watling (77*) and Colin de Grandhomme (72) put on a huge 142-run stand for the 6th wicket as they ended the day with 192/6.

2 – Twice in two Tests Trent Boult and Tim Southee shared ten wickets in an innings. Southee took a 6-wicket haul while Boult took four wickets in England’s first innings. Boult and Southee took six and four wickets respectively in the first innings of Auckland Test. These are the only two instances for New Zealand where two bowlers shared ten wickets in a Test innings since 1991.
3 – The ten wickets shared by Boult and Southee is only the 3rd instance since 2007 where the opening pair shared ten wickets in a Test inning. Bangladesh’s opening pair shared ten wickets against England in the 2016 Dhaka Test while the Southee and Boult pair achieved the feat in the first innings of the Auckland Test.
5 – Number of centuries for Jonny Bairstow in Test cricket. He scored all of those while playing as the wicketkeeper. Since taking up the keeping role in the 2013 Boxing Day Test, no other keeper scored more than three Test tons.
29 – Runs New Zealand’s top five aggregated in the first innings. These are the fewest New Zealand’s top five managed in a Test innings since the 21 runs in the 2013 Lord’s Test also against England.
These 29 runs are also the fewest for the Kiwis in a home Test innings since the 22 runs against the Windies in the 1987 Christchurch Test match.
36 – Score at which New Zealand lost their 5th wicket in their first innings. These are the fewest they managed before losing their 5th wicket in a Test innings since the 25 in the 2nd innings in the 2014 Auckland Test against India.
142 – The 142-run stand between BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme is the 2nd highest 6th wicket partnership in Test cricket after losing five wickets for 36 or a lower score. Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva put on 211 against Australia in the 2016 Colombo Test after they lost their first five wickets for 26 runs.
The pair’s 142-run stand is also the highest 6th wicket stand for New Zealand against England in Test cricket. Martin Crowe and Adam Parore shared 141 for the 6th wicket in the 1994 Manchester Test.
