New Zealand completed an innings victory against England shortly after the Tea break on the final day of the Mount Maunganui Test match. Neil Wagner delivered for the home team taking crucial wickets on the last day. England, who conceded a 262-run first-innings lead, were bundled out for just 197 runs in their 2nd essay. No batsman played a long innings for England who kept losing wickets regularly. Sam Curran and Jofra Archer put on 59 for the 9th wicket in 16 overs before Wagner took the last two wickets in consecutive deliveries.

All the statistical highlights from New Zealand’s innings victory against the England team:

Innings defeat despite a big score in the first innings:

1 – England became the first team to post a 300+ total in the first innings of a Test match in New Zealand only to end up losing by an innings margin. New Zealand’s 293 against South Africa in the 1932 Christchurch Test is the previous highest total in the first innings of a Test hosted by New Zealand which resulted in an innings loss.

13 – England recorded the 13th instance of a team losing by an innings margin even after posting 350+ total in the first innings of a Test match. Six such instances have been recorded since 2012 and England have been on the receiving on four instances in this period.

3 – Number of times England lost to New Zealand by an innings margin. They lost the 1984 Christchurch Test by innings and 132 runs while they lost the D/N Test hosted by Auckland by a margin of innings and 49 runs.

A rare defeat after electing to bat for England:

2006 – The last instance of a team losing a Test match in New Zealand after electing to bat first before England was Sri Lanka in the 2006 Christchurch Test. Between these two matches, the teams electing to bat in New Zealand have won five of the 12 Tests while another seven games ended in a draw.

Broad’s moves up in ducks chart:

34 – Stuart Broad now has the joint 4th most number of ducks in Test cricket alongside Shane Warne. Courtney Walsh leads the list with 43 ducks while Chris Martin (36) and Glenn McGrath (35) are slightly ahead of Broad.

9 – Number of times Board has been dismissed for a first-ball duck in Test cricket; the joint 4th most by any player. Muttiah Muralitharan (14), Rangana Herath (11) and Courtney Walsh (10) had 10 or more such ducks. Steve Harmison and Chris Martin also have nine first-ball ducks in this format.

A rare double for Watling:

2 – BJ Watling became the 2nd wicket-keeper in Test cricket to score a double century and effect 5 or more dismissals in the same match. Kumar Sangakkara recorded this double in 2002 Lahore Test against Pakistan.

Wagner doesn’t need the new ball:

8 – Neil Wagner now has taken eight 5-wicket hauls in Test cricket; all while coming in as 1st change bowler or later. Among pacers, only Ian Botham has more 5-fer than Wagner while coming in as 1st change or later.

The New Zealand left-arm pacer has seven 5-wicket hauls as a 2nd change or later and four of those as 3rd change or later in Test cricket. Both are the most for any fast bowler in the history of Test cricket.

Root’s misery in New Zealand continues:

22.09 – Joe Root’s batting average in Test cricket on New Zealand soil comes down to 22.09 which is the lowest for him in any country. Till date, Root has scored only 243 runs from 11 innings in New Zealand with two fifties and bagged two ducks.

His average against New Zealand in this format reads only 35.21 which is also the lowest for him against any opponent. (Min: 5 innings)
