New Zealand vs India, 2019: 1st T20I – Statistical Highlights

A record defeat for India:

80 – India’s 80-run defeat is their first T20I loss by 50 or more runs. Their previous biggest T20I defeat in terms of runs was by 49 runs against Australia in the 2010 WT20.

3 – India lost all the three T20Is they played in New Zealand so far. They featured in two T20Is in 2009 and lost both while defending a total.

Seifert makes a mark:

84 – Tim Seifert’s 84 is the highest individual score by a New Zealand wicketkeeper in T20I cricket while opening the innings. Brendon McCullum had scores of 123 and 91 in T20Is while playing as a keeper but not while opening. The previous highest T20I score by a New Zealand keeper-opener was 81* by McCullum against Zimbabwe in the 2011 Harare T20I.

A collective bowling failure:

219/6 – The total of 219/6 is the 3rd highest conceded by any team that used only five bowlers in a T20I. New Zealand conceded 245/5 in the last year’s Auckland T20I against Australia while defending a total while Windies conceded 243/5 against the Kiwis in Mount Maunganui in January last year.

219/6 – The 219/6 is the joint 2nd highest total which India conceded in the T20I format. The highest a team made against India is 245/6 by Windies in the 2016 Lauderhill T20I. India conceded 219/4 against South Africa in the 2012 Johannesburg T20I.

9 – India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar (47), Khaleel Ahmed (48) and Hardik Pandya (51) conceded over 45 runs in this game. This is the first time that three different bowlers conceded 45 and more runs in a T20I and overall the 9th such instance for any team in this format.

A new pair of brothers:

2 – Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya became the 2nd pair of brothers to feature in the same T20I for India. Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan together featured in 8 T20Is for India. Both the pairs hail from Baroda .

Lower order saves an embracement for India:

52 – The 52-run partnership between Krunal Pandya and MS Dhoni is only the 2nd fifty-run stand for the 7th wicket in T20Is for India. Dhoni shared an unbeaten 59-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin in the 2012 Sydney T20I against Australia.

A rare Dhoni dominated scorecard:

5 – This was the 5th instance of MS Dhoni being the top run-getter or the joint high scorer in a T20I for India. The other four instances came against Australia in the 2012 Sydney T20I, against England in the 2012 Wankhede T20I, against New Zealand in the WT20 2016 and against England in the 2017 Kanpur T20I. India ended up on the losing side in all the five matches.
