India broke their hoodoo in the T20I format on New Zealand soil as they levelled the 3-match series with a dominating 7-wicket win. Krunal Pandya picked up three wickets in his first two overs to leave the Kiwis reeling at 50/4 in the 8th over. Colin de Grandhomme’s 28-ball 50 and Ross Taylor’s 42 helped the hosts to finish with 158/8. Skipper Rohit Sharma hit a 29-ball fifty at the top and shared a 79-run partnership for the opening wicket. Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 40 took India over the line with seven balls to spare.

A record win for India:
37 – Number of wins for India in the T20I format while chasing; the most for any team. India won 37 games and lost 17 while chasing in this format out of 56 games with another two ending without a result. India went past Pakistan’s tally of 36 victories in chases from 64 games.
1 – This was India’s maiden win in T20I cricket in New Zealand. India featured in three T20Is in New Zealand before this game and slumped to a defeat in each of them. This was also India’s first ever victory in the T20I format while chasing against New Zealand.
Rohit climbs up T20I charts:
2288 – Rohit Sharma became the leading run-getter in the T20I format as he surpassed Martin Guptill’s tally of 2272 runs. Around this time in 2018, Guptill went past Brendon McCullum’s 2140 runs to become the highest run-scorer in Men’s T20I cricket during a game played at the Eden Park in Auckland only.
102 – With the 2nd of his 4th six in today’s game, Rohit Sharma became only the 3rd player in T20I history to hit 100 sixes. Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill have 103 sixes apiece to their name in the T20I format.
12 – Number of wins as captain in T20I cricket for Rohit Sharma; the most for any captain from their first 14 T20Is. Michael Clarke and Sarfaraz Ahmed also had 12 wins apiece among their first 14 T20Is as captain.
Rohit goes past Dhoni:
349 – Rohit Sharma now has hit 349 sixes across all the three formats in International cricket. These are the most number of sixes by an Indian in International cricket surpassing MS Dhoni’s 348 maximums.
Krunal sets up for India:
3/28 – Krunal Pandya became only the 4th left-arm spinner to take three wickets in a T20I in New Zealand. No left-arm spinner has taken more than three wickets in a T20I game thus far. Daniel Vettori has two 3-fers in this format at home. Krunal is also the first Indian to take more than two wickets in a T20I on New Zealand soil.
A solid effort from the top-order:
5 – Only the 5th time in T20I cricket where India’s top three batsmen scored 30 or more runs. However, this was the first such instance for the Men in Blue during a run-chase.
96.77 – Shikhar Dhawan’s batting strike-rate during his 31-ball 30. Dhawan is only the 2nd Indian opener to score 30 and more in a T20I at a strike-rate under 100. Gautam Gambhir scored at an S/R of 93.33 during his unbeaten 60-ball 56 against Australia in the 2012 MCG T20I.
