New Zealand handed over a debut to their hard-hitter and in-form batsman Daryl Mitchell in the first T20I against India. Mitchell came in with a reputation of a fierce smasher of the ball and was in red-hot form in the Super Smash as well. There was a lot of excitement among the fans to watch him bat in Wellington. But his debut stint at the crease was cut-short by Dinesh Karthik with his acrobatics at the boundary line.

Mitchell came out to bat in the 13th over of the innings after Tim Seifert fell. He got off the mark with a superb boundary as well. The fact that his team was well placed and looking good to post more than 200 runs on the board made him feel at ease on debut. He also tried to heave the ball in the 15th over when Hardik Pandya was bowling but couldn’t go past Karthik who was fielding at long-on.

Karthik’s presence of mind

The fierce stroke went to straight to Dinesh Karthik but the fielder was aware of the boundary line. He took the catch nicely but the balance took him over the boundary line. However, Karthik, just in time, managed to get rid of the ball before stepping his foot over the ropes.

The job wasn’t done though and he had to charge back inside to catch the ball again. On the way back DK put his foot on the advertising hoardings which are used as boundary line but even here he was successful in lifting his leg off it just in time before catching the ball. The several replays with different angles proved it even as Karthik himself wasn’t sure.

But he had done enough for the third umpire to adjudge Mitchell out who could only score eight runs off six deliveries with a solitary four to his name.
