After New Zealand conceded the second T20I game to India by a margin of seven wickets, Ish Sodhi addressed the media in a press conference. The right-arm leg spinner, during the interaction, addressed the media wherein he lauded India’s death bowling, calling it ‘fantastic’.

The media directed several questions at him regarding the defeat, the first of which was concerning the inadequacy of the 1st innings total of New Zealand. Ish’s response was: “In T20 Cricket these days, especially in grounds like Eden Park, the total needs to be above par. I think we were 20 runs below par tonight.”

“Since the 1st innings total was below par, it was required of us to take wickets at the top during the powerplay. But India played a very measured Powerplay and we didn’t get wickets, that set them out for the middle[overs],” he further added. The next important topic he spoke about was the issue concerning the faulty DRS decision that got Daryl Mitchell out. Sodhi said the decision was ‘shocking’ and something he had not seen in international cricket before.

Sodhi further praised India’s bowling, especially the frequent yorkers that were bowled. New Zealand were seemingly going well enough when Ross Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme were on the crease. Sodhi said that the Kiwis looked swift enough to post a total of 180, as it seemed at that point. After Sodhi dismissed skipper Rohit Sharma he expected to take more wickets. “T20 Cricket is such that if you’re getting wickets, you’re always in the game. After getting Rohit out, I expected to take a couple of more wickets,” said the leg spinner.

“It felt similar to an IPL game”

Speaking about the lively cheer in the crowd and the huge turn out of the audience for the game in Auckland, he said that it reminded him of the IPL. He also said the crowd was pretty loud and it was great as he had a similar experience during the previous series against Sri Lanka. Coming back to the bowling, he said that the pitch was ‘slow’ as compared to the Wellington. But it was really India’s bowling that made the difference today, in Auckland.
