New Zealand vs India: Jimmy Neesham reacts after being outsmarted by MS Dhoni in Wellington
Neesham scored 44 runs in the final ODI against India.
India won the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand sealing the series by 4-1 in Wellington. With this victory, they also proved that their lacklustre performance in Hamilton was a one-off for the team. After posting 252 runs on the board, they restricted the Kiwis to 217 runs to win the game. However, more than anything else, Jimmy Neesham’s run-out hogged the limelight and how he was bluffed by MS Dhoni with his smartness.
Neesham was looking dangerous and was batting on 44 when the incident took place in the 37th over of the chase. He missed the sweep off Kedar Jadhav’s bowling and was hit on the back leg and a vociferous appeal followed. At the same time, the ball went a little bit away from Dhoni behind the stumps and the umpire didn’t raise his finger.
Meanwhile, the Kiwi batsman tried to steal a single and left his crease. But until then, MS Dhoni had his eyes on the ball and had collected it. Neesham was unaware where the ball and was surprised to see it in the veteran’s hands who threw it towards the stumps. The batsman tried returning to the crease but it was too late until then and was adjudged run-out by the third umpire.
Dhoni’s smartness foxes Neesham
It was MS Dhoni’s street smartness that foxed Jimmy Neesham. Following his dismissal, the all-rounder was trolled by the fans on social media and duly he also accepted his mistake after the match. Neesham felt that he should’ve seen the ball before leaving the crease. “Thanks for all the advice. Figure out where the ball is, then run. Gotcha,” he wrote in his tweet via his official Twitter handle.
Here’s Neesham’s tweet:
Not long ago, Neesham had showered praise on MS Dhoni saying that the opposition has to get the experienced player’s wicket in order to get confirmed that they’ve won the game. “When you’re bowling to him, you know you haven’t won the game till you’ve got him out. Hopefully, we can do that tomorrow and run through them,” Neesham had said ahead of the fifth ODI of the series.
