New Zealand vs India: Rohit Sharma in with a chance of overtaking Virat Kohli in T20Is
The first T20I is set to take place on Wednesday, February 6.
India dominated New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI series, which they won 4-1. Only at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, the Black Caps were able to get the visiting team by the scruff of its neck and won by eight wickets. India didn’t have the services of Virat Kohli, their all-format captain, as the 30-year-old was rested after he took the national team to an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.
Thereafter, Rohit Sharma took over the mantle of leadership and guided India to victory in the fifth and final encounter at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. After the thumping performance in the 50-overs format, the Men in Blue would undoubtedly be high on confidence and are now scheduled to play a three-match T20I series, which gets underway on Wednesday, February 6.
Another record in sight for Rohit Sharma
Kohli won’t take part in the series and the onus would be on Sharma to guide the team. In the meantime, the latter has a golden chance of overtaking Virat Kohli in terms of the number of victories in the format. The 30-year-old Virat has led India to victory in 12 out 20 matches. Rohit, on the other hand, has 11 triumphs in 12 encounters and also boasts of a better win percentage than Virat.
Last year, the Nagpur-born captained India to glory in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka and also helped his team clean sweep the Windies in the three-match series. Rohit also wielded magic in the ODI format as India won the 2018 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), beating Bangladesh in the final. The Men in Blue were the only team that remained unbeaten in the 50-overs event.
As far as the upcoming T20Is against the Kiwis are concerned, the opening match is scheduled to be played at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington followed by the ones at the Eden Park in Auckland on February 8 and at the Seddon Park in Hamilton on February 10.
