New Zealand is on their course to yet another victory against tourist West Indies in the ongoing 2-match Test series. After a win in the opener, the Kiwis fancy a whitewash sitting comfortably on the driver’s seat in the second Test in Hamilton. The Windies need another 414 runs while the Kiwis will have two full days to topple the visitors’ batting lineup. Day 3 concluded with Windies posting 30/2 on the scoreboard.
However, as crucial as the day was, it produced some drama as well. A bizarre DRS decision by TV umpire Ian Gould had confusion reigning all-around Seddon Park. Kiwi all-rounderColin de Grandhomme was hit on the pad on a Shannon Gabriel delivery as the West Indies team appealed for lbw. But umpire Rod Tucker gave it ‘not out’.
The tourists opted to review the decision, and after Gould looked at the ‘Snicko’ technology not showing evidence of an inside edge, he went back to Tucker to instruct him to stay with his original decision. Just one issue. Gould forgot to check ‘ball tracking’ for the lbw.
The Black Caps batsman thought he may have just got away with one, but the decision was overturned by TV umpire Ian Gould. The 31-year-old all-rounder was eventually, correctly, dismissed lbw for 22 during the final session of day three.
So as Tucker signalled not out, and the West Indian players had their arms up in protest, Gould interrupted him and acknowledged his mistake. He needed to look at ‘ball tracking’, which would determine if the ball struck de Grandhomme in line with the stumps and whether it was going to go on and hit them.
It indeed was, and Gould then went back to Tucker and gave him the go-ahead to actually change his decision. So up went the finger, and de Grandhomme was on his way.
