India’s box office clash with England has seen the visitors taking the upper hand in the Test, which has been marred by rain. India’s dominance in the fifth and final Test came after batting heroics from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja as both batters registered contrasting yet memorable centuries. The all-rounder sent a fitting reply to James Anderson, who commented on his batting proficiency after the end of play on the second day.
Jadeja registered his third Test century and his first on foreign soil as his mammoth partnership with Pant helped India from a position of peril at 98/5 to 416 at the end of the first innings. Anderson, who bagged his sixth fifer against India, commented on Jadeja’s batting and his overall improvement as a batter.
“In the past he was coming at 8, bat with the tail so he had to chance his arm a little bit, whereas now at 7 he can bat like a proper batter. He leaves really well and made it difficult for us,” Anderson told the press.
The all-rounder didn’t take kindly to the veteran pacer’s words and had a few words of his for the fast bowler when asked about the Englishman’s comments.
“See, when you score runs, everyone says they think of themselves as a proper batter. But I’ve always tried to give myself time at the crease, to set a partnership with whoever is at the crease, to play with him. It’s nice Anderson has realized that after 2014,” Jadeja said in the post-match conference.
Notably, Jadeja and Anderson were involved in a controversial altercation in the opening Test of India’s tour in 2014. The Englishman was charged with a level 3 offence for allegedly pushing and abusing the Indian all-rounder during a clash in the corridor when the teams were making their way back into the pavilion. An official complaint was launched against the England pacer by the then-team manager Sunil Dev to the match referee.
“Mahi [Dhoni] and everyone complained that he [Anderson] physically touched him [Jadeja] and pushed him. It was all over the dressing room. It is a serious matter only because you can’t push anybody. So I put in a complaint with the match referee,” Dev had told ESPNcricinfo.
