It would be nice to replace Cook but we'll have wait to see: Rory Burns
England will travel to Sri Lanka without Cook.
Ever since Alastair Cook has decided to bring curtains down on his illustrious career, a few names are doing the rounds in the County circuit to replace him. England next Test assignment is the Sri Lanka tour in November and Surrey skipper Rory Burns is the leading name to fill the huge void in the line-up. However, the 28-year-old is excited to replace the legendary cricketer but preferred to wait and watch before commenting anything on his selection.
Burns has been in sizzling form in the ongoing County Championship. He has amassed 1047 runs so far this season in 11 matches and is still going strong. He is averaging close to 70 and the highest score of 193 proves that he has the ability to grind down to work hard when it matters. As of now, the selectors have just opted to name England’s squad for the final Test against India which will also be the farewell encounter for the left-handed opener.
He’s had a great career
Rory Burns will lead Surrey in their next game against Essex and ahead of the game, he went on to praise Alastair Cook for his contribution to England cricket. However, when stressed about the possibilities of him replacing the cricketer in the team, Burns opted to play safe and didn’t comment much.
“He’s had a great career. I don’t think I could do it justice with what I say about him. If there’s a spot going there it would be nice but we’ll have to wait and see,” he was quoted as saying by Morning Star.
Meanwhile, Cook will continue to feature in the County circuit next year and the captain of Essex Ryan Ten Doeschate seems to be thrilled with his return to the team. “Obviously we’ll be delighted to have him around. It’s great for us, I think he’s still got a lot of cricket in him. He’s only 33 and I think a sustained period of cricket and that enjoyment that he still gets from doing well suits him and suits us amazingly well,” he said.
