Nick Compton apologises to the Indian fans after criticising Virat Kohli over his gesture towards the crowd
Compton had earlier felt Virat Kohli had no right to gesture anything to the crowd.
Virat Kohli led the Indian team to a massive victory over Australia on Sunday, June 9 in the ongoing World Cup. Though it was a close game, the Men in Blue always dominated the proceedings and were ahead of their opponents from the word go. During the match, there was another heart-touching which left everyone praising the Indian captain.
A section of Indian crowd was booing Steve Smith when he was fielding at the boundary and that irked Kohli. He sought their attention after taking a single during one of the overs and gestured them to clap for the former Australia captain. The Indian fans didn’t boo him since then and even Smith liked this act from Kohli as he went on to shake hands with him at the end of the over.
However, Nick Compton, the former England cricketer, lambasted Virat Kohli strangely when the world was praising the latter. He went on to say that Kohli had no right to tell the crowd what to do. “I don’t think Virat Kohli had any right to tell fans to stop booing at Warner and Smith but rather clap them.. found it rather condescending if truth be told! @cricketworldcup #CricketWorldCup2019,” he wrote in his tweet.
Compton’s U-turn
Obviously, the comment didn’t go down well with the Indian fans. Nick Compton faced a severe backlash from them and he had to apologise for everyone on Twitter in a day’s time. He also urged the fans to enjoy the cricket. The 35-year-old also cleared that Kohli’s intentions were clean and also went on to say that he appreciates different views.
“I’m sorry if people feel my comments regarding Virat Kohli were unfair… I’m sure it was harmless guys and his intentions were well-meaning. Let’s enjoy the cricket and let the fans make their own minds up.. I appreciate your views let’s keep it friendly,” Compton tweeted.
