Team India had a major scare in the final minutes of the finals of the Nidahas Trophy 2018. With the departure of the hitherto anchor of the run chase, Rohit Sharma, Bangladesh had managed to have a strong hold on the game. A brilliant 18th over from Mustafizur Rahman kept the equation in their favor with India needing 34 off the last two overs.
It was right then when Dinesh Karthik walked in to bat and played the innings off his life. He scored an unbeaten 29 off just 8 deliveries to steer India home on the night. This knock included a bludgeoning penultimate over that yielded 22 runs. Rubel Hossain was at the receiving end of the onslaught. The Men in Blue needed 5 to win off the last ball and Dinesh Karthik clubbed a maximum to seal the game for his side.
Earlier in the game, Sabbir Rahman had scored a decent 77 to take Bangladesh’s total to 166. His knock was a counter-attacking one after Yuzvendra Chahal had struck thrice earlier in the game. The Indian run chase played largely around Rohit Sharma before Dinesh Karthik took the center stage to show what he is capable of doing at the highest level.
Here are the India Player Ratings for the match:
Shikhar Dhawan – 2/10
Shikhar Dhawan had an off day with the bat. Dhawan, after getting a solid six up front in the game, failed to capitalize on his good run of form. He could only score 10 runs in the match before becoming the first Indian batsman to be dismissed on the day.
Rohit Sharma – 8/10
The good news for the Indian team is that Rohit Sharma is finally back in good form. After a brilliant 89 in the previous game, Rohit backed it up with a fine 56 on the night of the finals. He anchored the Indian run chase to perfection with a well paced knock. His knock came off 42 deliveries with four boundaries and three maximums. Also, earlier in the game, he looked spot on with his bowling changes to not allow the Bangladeshi batsmen to settle in.
Suresh Raina – 1/10
Suresh Raina failed to play a big knock in the finals. Being a big name and more importantly, a senior player in the side, Raina was expected to shoulder greater responsibility in the finals. He, however, perished for a duck on the all important night.
KL Rahul – 4/10
KL Rahul came in to bat at number four in the game. He had a lot of time at his disposal to settle at the crease and get his eyes in. Rahul started off on a positive note and ended up hitting a couple of boundaries and a six during his stay at the crease. He scored 24 off 14 deliveries before heading back to the pavilion.
Manish Pandey – 4.5/10
Manish Pandey’s struggle at the crease looked evident. He did not look very confident at the crease and ended up consuming a lot of deliveries up front when he came to bat. He certainly tried to catch up in the end overs with the asking rate going up. He was dismissed in the 18th over on 28. His knock came at a rather sluggish rate, in 27 deliveries.
Vijay Shankar – 2/10
Vijay Shankar finally got a chance to bat in the series and the moment he got it was a big one. However, at one stage, it looked as if he had succumbed to the pressure. Mustafizur managed to bowl a lot of dot balls to him. He scored 17 off 19 deliveries in the game. With the ball, he had a tough night as well. He conceded 48 runs in the four overs that he bowled.
Dinesh Karthik – 10/10
Dinesh Karthik was the star of the night. It would not be wrong to state that DK won the match and the title singlehandedly for the Indian team. Team India were down and out in the match when Dinesh came in and hit a quick unbeaten 29 off 8 deliveries to win the match for the Indian side. This certainly goes down as his best performance at the highest level.
Washington Sundar – 5/10
Washington Sundar continued his good form with the ball in the finals as well. He picked up a wicket in the second over that he bowled on the night. He dismissed Liton Das packing cheaply in the game. In the four overs that he bowled, he returned with figures of 1/20.
Yuzvendra Chahal – 8/10
A couple of games ago, Yuzvendra Chahal was in the firing line of the critics for having fallen off his radar. However, the leggie managed to come back strong since then. After a good show in the previous game, Chahal returned as the pick of the Indian bowlers in the finals. He dismissed three crucial batsmen in the Bangladesh innings on the night. He finished with figures of 3/18.
Jaydev Unadkat – 3/10
Jaydev Unadkat came back in the side at the expense of Mohammed Siraj who had replaced him in the previous game. The problems for Unadkat persisted though. He failed to contain the run flow in the match yet again. In the four overs that he bowled, he gave away 33 runs. Much to the saving grace for the pacer, he got two wickets in his final over on the night.
Shardul Thakur – 2/10
Shardul Thakur had a tough time with the ball on the night. Thakur seriously need to rework his strategies when he heads back home. His struggle to contain the run flow has been a major concern for the team management. He was very expensive on the night of the finals as well. He gave as many as 45 runs in his spell of four overs.
