India took on Sri Lanka in their third game of the Nidahas Trophy in Colombo last night and beat them fair and square by a comprehensive margin of 6 wickets. While most of the Indian players excelled in their roles, there were a few who couldn’t quite perform up to the mark and came in twitter’s line of fire as usual.
Rohit Sharma’s form has been a bit shaky in white ball cricket in the last few months and there was no change in fortunes for him in this game either as he was dismissed cheaply after scoring just 11 runs. It was Akila Dhanajiya again who became the cause of his downfall as he trapped Rohit into playing a false stroke.
The right-handed opener came down the track to smash the off-spinner over midwicket, but the ball was a bit quicker and its trajectory was a bit flatter than he expected and he ended up getting a bit too close to the ball for his liking as a result of which he couldn’t quite get the elevation he wanted on the shot offering a catch to the short midwicket fielder. As soon as Rohit got out, the trolls were well and truly at their work and the memes started flowing for India’s stand-in skipper.
However, before Rohit, Twitter already had a feast on Rajasthan Royals’ million dollar man Jaydev Unadkat. Considering left-armer’s impressive performances in the last IPL, the Royals brought him at a hefty price in the auction, but his stocks since then have come down drastically as he has lost his rhythm and is being taken apart by the batsmen on a consistent basis in international T20 cricket. With every boundary that Unadkat conceded yesterday, the trolls brutally made fun of the Royals’ owners for spending that much of money on the Saurashtra bowler.
However, the funniest incident of the match happened when KL Rahul was batting. The top order batsman got his opportunity after a fairly long wait and he was looking in good touch, milking the bowling with ease and setting himself a nice platform to launch later.
But all of a sudden he had a “brain-fade” as looking to punch a ball through the leg side, he went too deep into his crease and eventually kicked the stumps on his way back, becoming India’s first ever player to get dismissed hit-wicket in the shortest format of the game. It was so unfortunate and disappointing from Rahul’s point of view, but the Twitterati saw the lighter side of it and there were some hilarious memes on that dismissal too.
