2. Spinners striking in Powerplays
The proposition of the spin bowlers bowling in the powerplays is not a new one. In fact, it is seen as a bright prospect in the shortest format of the game. However, the implementation of the same is not always seen at the highest level. Team India dared to do so, and on a regular basis, in this particular series.
Washington Sundar found immense success with the new ball and that worked wonders for him. Also, Yuzvendra Chahal got his opportunity to bowl in the powerplays in the finals and proved to be very effective. He returned with a triple strike in the finals to put the Indian team in the commanding position early on in the game.
3. Washington Sundar’s heroics
Another big positive for team India in the series was the performance of Washington Sundar. The 18-year old spinner was handed the new ball in every fixture. He delivered in each and every game. His lines with the new ball were immaculate. One might wonder that he just came up with faster ones with the new ball to ensure no easy runs leaked out. However, the truth was there to be seen.
Sundar showed great variations with his deliveries. The dismissal of Liton Das in a league game where Sundar foxed him with a loopy spinning delivery is a testimonial of the same. Sundar finished with 8 wickets in the series – the most by any bowler. He was awarded the Player of the Series for his heroics. For the stats, Sundar became only the third teenager, after Rashid Khan and Shadab Khan, to win a Player of the Series award in the T20Is.
