The Nidahas Trophy 2018 recently ended with a heart-racing thriller between India and Bangladesh at the iconic R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. However, India clinched victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy of Dinesh Karthik’s herculean knock in the dying stages of the game. The series was played to celebrate Sri Lanka’s 70th independence anniversary.
However, apart from cricket, the series also has been a witness to some controversies. Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan entered into a heated argument with the umpires over a no-ball decision. In the same game, Nurul Hasan barged into the Sri Lankan players while serving drinks. Subsequently, they were fined 25 percent of their match fees along with one demerit points each.
Shakib- The suspected culprit
Another controversy sparked during the virtual semi-final between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. During Mahmudullah’s winning stroke off Isuru Udana, the glass-door of the Bangladesh dressing room was found shattered. Thereafter, Chris Broad, the match-referee, asked for a probe into the incident. Meanwhile, a video footage was released which turned out to be inconclusive.
In a recent development, as per reports in The Island, a Sri Lankan newspaper, Shakib has been alleged to have been involved in the act. The reports added that Movenpick Hotel had done catering for both the teams and one of the caterers revealed Shakib’s name to the match referee. The reports also claimed Broad to be lenient on the Bangladesh skipper, despite having eyewitnesses.
From the cricketing perspective, Bangladesh had been stupendous throughout the series. Albeit they lost all their games against India, Shakib’s men strung together a couple of masterful run chases against the hosts. Nevertheless, they have severely been criticized for their antics on the cricket pitch and such incidents will do nothing, but tarnish the reputation of cricket in the country.
