Nidahas Trophy 2018: Sri Lanka imposes ban on social media for India players

Political tensions have been a common phenomenon across the globe. Hatred among different religious groups has hogged the headlines on several occasions. Recently, a violence has erupted between the Buddhist and the Muslim community in Sri Lanka owing to which the Sri Lankan government has taken the drastic step of banning social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook for three days.

Rajitha Senaratne, a cabinet spokesperson, revealed to the media that posts appeared on Facebook which directed towards attacks on Muslims.

No Facebook and WhatsApp for the Indian players

The India cricketers are active participants in the social media platforms and one of them expressed the struggles of not being able to connect to the world. “I can see WhatsApp messages coming but I can’t read it. I can’t make calls also. It’s frustrating. Late in the evening it was coming and going, and quite unstable,” a member of the Indian team was quoted as saying by Indian Express in a recent interaction with the media.

Dialog, a telephone operator in Sri Lanka, has also circulated text messages pertaining to the temporary removal of the services. “On the directive of TRCSL in the interest of national security, access to certain Social Media sites and Messaging platforms will be restricted with immediate effect until further notice,” texts from the service providers mentioned.

Harin Fernando, the telecommunications also requested the public to eradicate hatred and make Sri Lanka a safe place for its countrymen. India’s campaign in the nation has started on a horrendous note as they were thumped by the hosts in the opening game at the R.Premadasa Stadium followed by their blockage from the social media. For the time being, Rohit Sharma’s men would be hoping to turn their fortunes around in their upcoming game against Bangladesh at the same venue.
