Nidahas Trophy: Thisara Perera to lead Sri Lanka in the next two matches
Interestingly, Suranga Lakmal was appointed the vice-captain who is yet to play a T20I in this series.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed Thisara Perera as the skipper of the team for the next two matches of the ongoing Nidahas Trophy. The regular skipper of the series Dinesh Chandimal was suspended by ICC for a serious over-rate offence during the game against Bangladesh on Saturday which the home side lost. Sri Lanka bowled as many as 4 overs less in the stipulated time. However, they will face off India in the next game of the tri-series on Monday and would be eyeing to win against them.
Nidahas Trophy has come alive after the Tigers gunned down the mammoth chase of 215 on Saturday. Sri Lanka could’ve only blamed their lacklustre bowling and fielding which crumbled under pressure. They were out of ideas and plans after the visitors’ openers attacked from the word go in the pursuit of a huge chase.
The official Twitter handle of SLC confirmed the news in their tweet which mentioned that Thisara Perera will lead the team in the next two games against India and Bangladesh.
State of the series
Nidahas Trophy is interestingly poised now as all the three teams have a win each after playing two matches. The second leg of the tournament will begin of Monday now as the similar thing can happen again as the net run-rate will come into play. Also, the teams would be eyeing huge victories now to boost their run rate considering they might need it in the near future as well.
Sri Lanka will miss Dinesh Chandimal in the upcoming matches as he was settled into the role and Perera is not so confident as the captain having lost most of the matches at the helm. This is a crucial stage of the series and the absence of a proper captain in the side could prove decisive for the home side.
