The second day of the ongoing third Test match between India and Sri Lanka was stopped due to smog pollution in Delhi at Ferozshah Kotla Stadium. The Sri Lankan players were seen wearing a pollution mask and the skipper Dinesh Chandimal was time and again complaining about their struggles. Finally, the situation came where the visitors denied continuing after several stoppages in play. However, furious at the proceedings, when the angry Indian skipper decided to declare the innings Lakshan Sandakan and Niroshan Dickwella were seen laughing out loudly.
The first time the match was interrupted when Lahiru Gamage started to feel sick while delivering the 123rd over of the innings. The skipper Chandimal then was involved in an animated chat with the umpires. The match was stopped for almost 12-15 minutes as the match referee came into the action along with the physio of Sri Lanka who was seen talking to the umpires as well. The incident was happening for the first time as the pollution levels in the capital city of India raised to an alarming level.
Head coaches and manager in the middle
The Indian batsmen were feeling comfortable in the middle as the visitors continued to fall sick on the ground. Soon after the play was resumed, Suranga Lakmal was absolutely unhappy with everything and left the field as he couldn’t bear the pollution. The stoppage saw the manager of Sri Lanka Asanka Gurusinha talking to the on-field umpires who was followed by the Indian head coach Ravi Shastri who surely wasn’t happy with the way things were going on.
Finally, when the play was interrupted yet again in the next over, India’s 128th, Chandimal and his men decided not to continue as Sri Lanka fell short of one player on the field. The matters went out of the hands with Nic Pothas, the head coach of Sri Lanka made his presence on the ground. However, Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri looked furious with everything and declared right away suggesting that they can bowl in these conditions.
Soon after the declaration came, the opposition players were seen relieved as Lakshan Sandakan and Niroshan Dickwella burst out laughing. The scenes didn’t look good sportingly as they were complaining of the pollution for a long time and were seen laughing after the innings was declared. While it could be with the relief that they were finally going to get some rest, but the actions of the visitors would be surely questioned later in the day.
Strikingly, Indians were absolutely comfortable in the field and completed the required quota of the overs to be bowled and no player was seen wearing the protective masks on the field.
