No doubt Virat Kohli will end up captaining more than any other captain in the history: Sanjay Bangar
With 36 wins and 14 losses, Virat Kohli is so far the most successful Indian Test captain.
Virat Kohli has led India in Tests quite impressively over the last few years now. The team has gone on to shine under him in both home and away games. But the lack of an ICC trophy in the skipper’s cabinet has often brought him under scrutiny.
After the extraordinary triumph of team India Down Under in 2020-21, followed by their dominance at home against England, the side looked confident walking into the WTC final. But the loss at this marquee event again started the chatter on Virat Kohli’s captaincy. Whereas the former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes that Kohli would go on to captain the side more than any other cricketer in the history of the game.
Expressing his thoughts on Star Sports’ show ‘Cricket Live’, Sanjay stated, “If as leaders, you have the opportunity to actually dictate the way the culture of the team is and the outcomes that the team derives, then, in that case, all of them (nominees) were in quest of excellence. So is Virat, I do not doubt that he’ll end up being probably captaining more than any other captain in the history of the game.”
Virat Kohli’s stint with India as the skipper
Kohli took up the mantle of captaincy in Tests from the 2014-15 tour against Australia. Since then he has skippered the team in 61 Test matches. India has displayed their sheer flair under him in Tests by triumphing in all the 11 test series at home. He has also stretched his limits by having the highest win percentage amongst the Indian captains as his win percentage is 70.43 surpasses Dhoni’s 59.52.
With 36 wins and 14 losses, Virat Kohli is so far the most successful Indian Test captain. He has gone past Dhoni, who won 27 Test matches as captain and lost 18 of the 60 games. Leading the team from the front, Kohli has redefined the standards of being fit and agile on the ground. Certainly, there is no doubt that he will further aim to take Indian cricket to greater heights by contributing with the bat and skippering the team as well.
