Ace Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma recently dead batted a question that was asked about his teammate Ajinkya Rahane. Team India has been in a rollicking form in the recent times. Despite a few injury concerns here and there, the team has managed to win all of it’s recent series. This shows how strong the bench strength is. Also, what this has done is that it has brought selection conundrums to the fore.
The player who comes in mind whilst hearing this phrase is Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane got his opportunity in the Caribbean this year, and he emerged as the player of the series. A last moment exit of Shikhar Dhawan during Sri Lanka tour fetched Rahane another opportunity. He again responded with four fifties in five matches. Despite continuous show, he was axed from the Australia T20I series.
Now, he is back for the upcoming fixtures against New Zealand. It will be interesting to see where and how the team management fit him in the scheme of things. As per the quotes in Times of India, Rohit Sharma clearly said that he has no clue about this. He mentioned that the batting position of Rahane will solely be determined by the skipper and the coach.
“See, I have no idea about that where he (Rahane) will be batting, yes Shikhar (Dhawan) is back, but speaking of Rahane he is probably grabbed all his opportunities in the last few series that he has played, now it’s on the captain and the coach, what they want and where they want him to bat especially, a couple of series back the captain came and spoke about that he considered him as a opening batsman and I don’t know if he (the captain) wants him to bat at four again , that will be completely his call, if he feels that we need someone like Rahane batting at four in this particular team right now, I don’t know if that will happen, it is very unclear, we have to wait and see,” quoted Rohit Sharma.
Important to keep performing
Rohit Sharma further added that it is important to be on the toes and keep performing. He credited Rahane for having performed continuously well in all the opportunities that have come his way in the recent times.
“Whatever limited opportunities he (Rahane) has had in last few series, he has performed well. It only shows that the strength of this team is so vast, that anyone can come at anytime and take the position, so we all have to be on our toes and keep performing the way we have in the last few years,” he remarked.
