No question Kohli is best, Michael Vaughan praises Indian captain after his 23rd Test ton
Kohli scored his 23rd Test hundred in the 2nd innings of the Trent Bridge Test match.
On Sunday, August 19, former England captain Michael Vaughan was trolled for criticising Indian bowlers for their pre-lunch performance. He later made amends to praise them after they bowled England out in one session. On Monday, August 20, Vaughan came out again with praises, this time for Indian captain Virat Kohli who scored a century in the second innings of Trent Bridge Test.
Kohli hit his second hundred of the series also his second in England to steer Team India to a strong position. It was his 23rd Test century which now puts him ahead of Mohammad Azharuddin (22) and at par with Virender Sehwag though he has played 34 matches less than Sehwag. Only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34) are ahead of Kohli now. Overall, the 29-year-old now has 58 international hundreds, 42 lesser than Tendulkar.
Vaughan’s post
“He is no question at all the best player in the world,” Vaughan tweeted.
Kohli’s 23 Test ton, however, was not flawless as he was dropped by Keaton Jennings in the fourth slip off James Anderson when he was on 93. He went on to score 103 before getting out LBW by Chris Woakes. Like in the first Test at Edgbaston, Kohli aggregated exactly 200 runs at Trent Bridge as well, falling just three short of a century in the first innings. India were 286 for 5 in their second innings, gaining a lead of 454 runs over the hosts in the Test with more than two days to go. Cheteshwar Pujara was the second highest scorer of the England innings with 72.
The Indian skipper now has 440 runs from six innings in this series at an average of 73.33 and is the highest scorer for both teams. He faced criticism before the start of the series for his below-par performance with the bat in the 2014 series in which he scored 135 runs in 10 innings. He slammed 149 in the very first Test innings he played in England in this series to bury the ghost of the 2014 series.
