No question of changing Sarfraz Ahmed as Pakistan captain, says Ehsan Mani
Former Pakistan opener and the newly appointed chairman of PCB cricket committee, Mohsin Khan recently spoke in favour of relieving Ahmed from captaincy in the longer format.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani is not convinced over the idea of removing Sarfraz Ahmed from the country’s Test captaincy and believed that discussion over the same is unnecessary since the team is doing well under him. Mani recently took over as the chief of the cricket board.
Former Pakistan opener and the newly appointed chairman of PCB cricket committee, Mohsin Khan recently spoke in favour of relieving Ahmed from captaincy in the longer format and 73-year-old Mani, also a former chief of the International Cricket Council reacted to it.
‘Mohsin’s statement an old one’
“I can’t understand why media is raising this issue. Sarfraz is captain for all the three formats and there is no question of changing him since the team is doing well,” Mani said, adding that Pakistan drew England in recent times under Ahmed’s captaincy and also won their latest Test series against Australia. “He is Pakistan captain and there is no debate on this,” Mani said as quoted by Dawn, also adding that Mohsin’s statement is an old one but the media kept on raising it repeatedly.
Speaking on Mohsin’s appointment as the chairman of the cricket committee, Mani said the former had a vast experience and also did very well as the head coach of the Pakistan side between 2010 and 2012. When asked about his own statement to the media that Ahmed’s performance would be reviewed before his appointment as the captain of the next World Cup scheduled in England between May and July, Mani denied it. “I did not give any such statement. Sarfraz is the Pakistan captain till the time our team is giving satisfactory performance,” he was quoted as saying.
Ahmed recently discovered support that he had lost after Pakistan’s dismal performance in the Asia Cup in September. Pakistan defeated Australia in a two-Test series 1-0 and then went on to win two successive T20I series – against Australia and New Zealand – by identical 3-0 margins. In Tests, Ahmed has led Pakistan seven times with three wins, as many losses and one draw.
