With no resolution of pay dispute, Travis Head may captain Australia
I’m looking forward to that opportunity: Head
With the ongoing payment disputes plaguing Cricket Australia, and players of the caliber of David Warner and Steve Smith threatening to remain unemployed, Travis Head may be chosen to lead in the upcoming tours of Australia to South Africa, Bangladesh and possibly the all-important Ashes series later this year.
Players of the Australian team who are on the cusp of establishing themselves in all formats of the game for Australia face a unique dilemma, i.e, to chose between their careers or their colleagues who are currently protesting the clauses in their central contract with Australia.
Cricket Australia had recently revised their pay proposal in order to bridge the divide between its international players and domestic players. The proposal failed to penetrate the impasse and by the looks of it, the turmoil within Cricket Australia would not be resolved in the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, players such as Usman Khawaja, Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head face a predicament which could affect their international prospects and also the face of the Test team. The three players have been included in the Australia ‘A’ tour to South Africa. That said if no MOU is agreed upon, Maxwell and Khawaja may have to pull out of the tour as they would unemployed.
But the case of Head is different as he is associated with the Board as he is on multi-year state contracts and will continue to be paid by Cricket Australia after June 30. Therefore, if he ponders about playing in the upcoming Test series in Bangladesh, he would go on to lead the side.
Here is a look at the details for the revised MoU
“I’m really excited about the A series,t gives me an opportunity to prove myself in four-day cricket. I get to captain the side in the one-day format, I’m looking forward to that opportunity. I feel comfortable at the minute that it’s all positive.” said Travis Head post-Champions Trophy according to Daily Telegraph.
