Bangladesh Cricket suffered a massive blow on Wednesday when the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned Shakib Al Hasan for two years for breaching the Anti-Corruption Code. The news was doing the rounds since the morning on October 29 but the ICC refused to comment with the player being under investigation. However, the Bangladesh all-rounder admitted to his mistakes and hence was banned from all cricket.
Having said that, one year of his suspension is already completed and will have to serve the ban for one more year. He will be free to resume international cricket on October 29, 2020, but will certainly miss the T20 World Cup in Australia which is set to take place next year.
According to ICC’s media release, Shakib Al Hasan failed to report a bookie approach three times – twice during Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe tri-series in January 2018 and once ahead of the IPL game between SRH and KXIP on 26 April 2018.
The charges imposed on Shakib Al Hasan are as follows:
- Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018 and / or the 2018 IPL.
- Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to the second approach in respect of the Tri-Series in January 2018.
- Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct – in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab on 26 April 2018.
Bangladesh cricket in turmoil after Shakib Al Hasan is banned
Interestingly, Shakib Al Hasan had led the players’ strike against the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) only last week placing 11 demands. The board later accepted all of them after which the strike was called off within 48 hours. But all was not well between him and the board with the latter sending him a show-cause notice for cracking a deal with the telecom company going against the central contract.
Moreover, the BCB chief Nazmul Hassan had indicated on Tuesday that Shakib Al Hasan might miss the upcoming India tour while not revealing more details. His absence from the practice sessions ahead of the tour also raised several eyebrows. Eventually, all the details were revealed on Wednesday evening and one of the best all-rounders in world cricket will miss the action until October 29 next year.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the shocking news:
No sympathy what’s so ever for Shakib Al Hasan … Non what’s so ever … In this era the players get briefed all the time about what they can & cant do and what that have to report straight away … 2 yrs isn’t enough … Should have been longer …

One year is suspended? Why? Bye bye for two years minimum

I have so enjoyed watching Shakib play cricket and I hope to see him emerge from this and continue to show his value on a cricket ground.

Sakib is surely best player and biggest figure ever in Bangladesh cricket. Easily the highest earning too. Why would he not report overtures made to him by bookies and leave himself vulnerable? Inexplicable

Shakib Al Hasan – Bangladesh's best cricketer – being banned from all cricket for two years is shocking, but what's more shocking is that he chose not to disclose the approach to engage in corrupt conduct not once, but thrice!

No player today, let alone as high profile a cricketer as Shakib, can afford to be ignorant of the ICC's Anti-Corruption Code. Even young players in age-group cricket are advised to report approaches. To let three such approaches go by is very strange https://t.co/KgtYBWOj13

With one year suspended sentence, Shakib Al Hasan's ban will get over on October 29, 2020. #ShakibAlHasan

So failure to report corrupt approaches is also punishable.
Funny how actual corrupt practice can be evaded though. How corrupt is that.Feel sorry for him!#ShakibAlHasan https://t.co/PzMgTKTEeM

Seems like a lot of people commenting without even reading the whole article. He was approached but he didn’t accept any offer. He didn’t mention this to ICC as per the report. https://t.co/FwD7FwycJF

ICC got involved in this. 2 year ban for not reporting approaches. Just makes you think how lightly Smith got off for literally cheating. https://t.co/3iZDjFnOIZ

Not at all sad for him. He could have reported it to the ACU & ICC immediately.
And the timing of the 'BAN' is interesting.
