No trust issues between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni

Disciplined India thrashed South Africa by 8 wickets in what was the virtual quarter-final on Super Sunday and stormed into the semi-finals. Kohli, as expected gave full credit to his bowlers for being accurate with their line and lengths which eventually built the pressure on the opposition.

One of the main reasons Team India has been doing exceedingly well in crunch games is the trust and respect that Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have for each other. The on-field discussions between them, may it be for reviewing the decision or for setting up the fields, the Indian captain seems to be enjoying Dhoni’s company more compared to the head coach’s.

“(While) you have to point out things that didn’t go well, you don’t want to be nagging them too much because they are professional cricketers, and I’ve played with a lot of these guys. You have to understand how to speak to them and how to communicate and discuss things with them,” said Kohli.

Dhoni playing crucial role

Kohli may deny reports of ‘rift’ with head coach Anil Kumble but there seems to be a communication breakdown between the two. This is where Kohli has looked up to Dhoni and the former captain has responded kindly and he has earned his successor’s respect.

“His (Dhoni’s) input is obviously always very precise, very helpful at any stage of the game. Today it was all about asking him whether to keep the slip in there long enough or what does he think of the fields and just taking assurance,” said Kohli.

“Obviously you don’t want to feel isolated out there. Yes, you’re making decisions, but the inputs from such experienced players are priceless at any stage of the day,” Kohli added. He even went on to say that success or failure is shared by a team and not scripted by any individual.

Though the hunt for India’s next coach has been a messy affair, it has not affected the team’s performances on the field. India will play Bangladesh in the semi-finals at Birmingham on 15th of June. The way Dhoni and Kohli have been gelling together is a heartening sign for Indian fans and they would hope it continues as the ICC Champions Trophy enters its business end.
