The Mumbai Indians won their first match of the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on 28th September 2021, beating the Punjab Kings (PBKS) side with 6 wickets and 6 balls to spare.

And, one man who played a crucial knock for the Rohit Sharma-led side was Saurabh Tiwary. In an innings embellished with 3 fours and 2 sixes, the left-handed batsman scored a 37-ball 45. And, Deep Dasgupta has opined that Tiwary played a very important knock for the MI side.

Adding that the MI side had lost early wickets, Dasgupta stated that Tiwary not only made sure that the Mumbai side kept the asking rate under control, but also ensured that they did not lose more wickets.

“He (Saurabh Tiwary) absolutely did. Because Mumbai lost those early wickets and in those middle overs it was looking a little difficult actually to be honest, with Bishnoi bowling, with Markram bowling as well as he did. So, it was very very important, not just to make sure that Mumbai doesn’t lose wickets but also make sure that the asking rate does not go out of reach,” said Deep Dasgupta in a chat with ESPNCricinfo.

Saurabh Tiwary got those big sixes coming in at the right time: Deep Dasgupta

Deep Dasgupta further said that Saurabh Tiwary scored the big sixes at exactly the right time, and opined that just when pressure was starting to build on the Mumbai side, Tiwary released it by playing some big shots.

“So, I think that innings from Saurabh Tiwary was very important. He got those big sixes coming at the right time as well and when it seemed as if MI was under pressure and Saurabh Tiwary was under pressure, he came out with those big sixes,” said Deep Dasgupta.

Dasgupta also added that nobody can question the talent that Tiwary possesses, and the left-handed MI batsman has contributed vital runs every time he has been provided with the opportunity. The 44-year-old concluded by stating that Tiwary will not lose his place in the MI side in the 2021 edition of the IPL.

“Nobody can question Saurabh Tiwary’s talent, and right from his Under-19 days, there are reasons why all these franchises have picked him, and India has picked him as well. Every time he gets an opportunity he has contributed, and I don’t think that he is going to lose his place in the side in a hurry this season,” concluded Dasgupta.
