'Not happy with my performance' - Prithvi Shaw analyses his Ranji Trophy show after group stage

Prithvi Shaw was touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket after he had led the Boys In Blue to a record fourth ICC U19 World Cup triumph in February 2018. The emerging cricketer thus became an overnight sensation as rewards and recognitions kept coming his way. He bagged a lucrative IPL contract with Delhi for INR 1.2 crore and also received his maiden India Test cap in October that year against the West Indies where he became the youngest batter to score a red-ball century on debut for India.

However, injuries and bad patches meant that Shaw was in and out of the national team. Meanwhile, it has been over a year since the youngster last donned the India jersey and is now looking to make a statement in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2021/22 where he is leading Mumbai. The promising batter has at the same time also made it clear that is not satisfied with his performances and believes he can do a lot better.

“Not really happy with my performance, should have been much better. You know 40s and 50s is nothing in cricket. But I feel it’s okay. I have been batting well and am feeling that something special is just around the corner,” said Shaw as quoted by Sportstar.

At the same time, the 22-year-old is also aware of the challenges of playing the IPL 2022 and then shifting focus towards the Ranji Trophy knockouts after the conclusion of the marquee tournament but, he is confident that he and his teammates can showcase outstanding performances for Mumbai.

“Definitely, it’s a long break. The next two and half months, many will shift focus to the IPL and will be playing white-ball. It’s going to be a matter of how we switch on again in the red-ball mode once the IPL is over,” the youngster said.

“We will have to train hard in that short window just like we did for the league stage. It will be harder because you cannot take anyone for granted and all the teams are quality oppositions. It will be an opportunity for all of us to play the knockouts and do our best for Mumbai”, he added.

Prithvi Shaw, who has been the 41-time Ranji Trophy winners Mumbai’s newly-appointed captain has managed scores of nine, 44, and, 53 and would be hoping to convert them into three-figure scores as the tournament progresses.
