'Not much difference' - Moeen Ali derives similarities between Eoin Morgan and MS Dhoni
'Very calm, very loyal to their players, brilliant captain, brilliant player,' said Moeen.
Veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali shared his views on Eoin Morgan after the World Cup-winning captain announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday. While speaking about Morgan, Moeen derived similarities between the leadership philosophies of the former English skipper and former India skipper MS Dhoni.
Moeen has played under Morgan in the national team and has also played under Dhoni’s captaincy in the IPL while representing Chennai Super Kings. Moeen heaped praises on Morgan by calling him the country’s “greatest white-ball captain ever”. Even though Morgan was going through a rough patch since the last couple of years, his overall numbers have been one of the finest among those who’ve led the English team.
“I have played under him (Morgan). I have played under MS Dhoni as well. There is not much difference between both of them in terms of the characteristics – very calm, very loyal to their players. Brilliant captain, brilliant player,” Moeen said during an interaction on Sports Tak.
Eoin Morgan has almost taken England from the dark days to very good days: Moeen Ali
Morgan’s captaincy has been highly appreciated by veterans all over the world because he led the team to new heights when the Three Lions were going through a slump. He transformed English cricket completely, and that was the major reason behind England lifting the World Cup in 2019. Under the Ireland-born cricketer, the Three Lions also made it to the final and semi-final of the 2016 and 2021 T20 World Cups respectively.
“He (Morgan) has almost taken England from the dark days to very good days. We were horrendous in white-ball cricket before that and he changed the mindset of the players. Actually, the way England is playing in Test cricket is because of him. He showed that if you have the mindset, you can play fearless cricket, which we are playing now. He is the greatest white-ball captain we’ve ever had,” added Moeen.
