The captain of the New Zealand team, Kane Williamson took part in an interview ahead of his team’s two-Test series against England. The Kiwi skipper who had missed the recently concluded 5-match T20I series versus the 2019 World Cup winners, reflected his views over the Super Over rule change made by ICC after the controversial end to the 2019 World Cup final.

England had defeated New Zealand based on a boundary count after the 50-over match and the one-over eliminator between the two sides had ended in a tie. This decision had irked the cricket fans however, the Blackcaps maintained the sportsman spirit and accepted ICC’s decision.

Kane Williamson on the 2019 World Cup loss

In his recent confab, Williamson talked about the team’s 2019 World Cup final loss, saying that it was hard to take the loss in that manner. Hindustan Times quoted him as follows, “It was hard to take. But at the same time, despite not agreeing how they would decide on a result, it was already in place.”

The ICC officials later trashed that rule, and they introduced a new way of choosing the winner. As per the new rule, in case of a tied Super Over, the teams will have to continue playing the Super Over until they get a winner.

Expressing his opinion about this alteration, Williamson said, “It’s not really a surprise (the rule was changed). I genuinely think that no one ever thought that was going to happen and it did. For it to actually happen is a pretty scary thing. It’s not really cricket and I think both teams appreciated that. It was a fantastic game to be a part of and a really competitive match. I think everyone has played hundreds of games of cricket and never had one decided quite like that.”

Co-incidentally, the 5-match T20I series between New Zealand and England was decided by a Super Over. After both the teams won two matches each, they played out a tie in the final game. England won the Super Over and sealed the series 3-2.

Kane Williamson and co. will look to avenge that loss in the 2-match Test series which will begin from 21st of November.
