The Universe Boss Chris Gayle is a real threat to the opposition each time he takes the field, especially in the T20 format. Every captain knows the more time Gayle spends in the middle the dangerous it is and hence have various strategies devised to get him out early. Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni managed to do that in their previous encounter as Harbhajan Singh got rid of the big man right at the start.

Gayle in the twilight of his career was picked by KXIP in the previous season and has returned with rich dividends as he scored 368 runs from 11 matches in 2018. This time around, he has 444 runs in 10 matches which has given them positive starts and almost ensured the Kings go through to the playoffs. He knows the opponents dread him but doesn’t think he’s scary and prefers if people do not ‘fear the Universe Boss’.

I am not scary okay?

“Nothing new for everyone to fear me. But hey, I am not scary okay? So there’s no need to fear the Universe Boss,” Chris Gayle was quoted as saying by India Today. “I am normal like everyone else. I may hit a few sixes more than anyone else but at the same time, it takes only 1 ball to get Universe Boss out.

He has been named in the Windies squad for the World Cup 2019 and is really looking forward to the tournament. This will be the fifth time Gayle features in a World Cup and probably the last given he is 39. The Jamaican to date is the only player to have scored a hundred in the U19 World Cup, World T20, 50-overs World Cup, Champions Trophy and World Cup Qualifier.

“The World Cup is a big thing for the entire world to see their own nations do well in the World Cup and I am looking forward to it as well. I will definitely be a part of the West Indies side of the World Cup. I will be fit and ready and really looking forward to it. A lot of talks have been around that teams should be wary of the West Indies based on what has actually happened in the ODI series vs England at home. Once the team is selected and we can come together as a group, I am sure we can do some damage in the World Cup.

He has intentions of extending his career if things go well and Windies do manage to win the World Cup title. The fact that he is still getting the runs, hitting those sixes and has the desired impact on the game, makes Gayle think that he might just be peeking at 39.

“Maybe I am getting better with age. One of my best ODI performances came against England. Maybe I am beginning to peak at 39,” he said.
