Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli hasn’t made a stunning start to the UAE leg of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The talismanic batter got out for five against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as fans were left disappointed. It has to be noted Kohli made a couple of major announcements before this game which made this much-awaited. While several fans and experts backed him to fire, the 32-year-old couldn’t live up to the expectations.
For the unversed, the coin landed in RCB’s favour and a confident-looking Kohli opted to bat first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. He looked watchful at the start and even gathered a boundary through his trademark cover drive. However, the veteran couldn’t play an innings of substance as Prasidh Krishna accounted for his wicket.
It was the second over of the innings and the right-arm pacer bowled a sharp inswinger. Kohli couldn’t read the ball and the ball smashed the pads. Impressed by KKR’s appeal, the on-field umpire adjudged the veteran batsman out. Kohli did challenge the decision and went for a review. However, the big screen showed the ball hitting the top of the leg-stump. This way Kohli had to take the long walk back.
Virat Kohli to step down as RCB captain after IPL 2021
Notably, Kohli recently announced he’ll step down as RCB captain following the conclusion of this year’s IPL. The 32-year-old will also leave India’s T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup 2021. The right-handed batter cited the ‘immense’ workload behind these major calls. With Kohli’s decisions taking the cricket world by storm, many were intrigued to see how he performs in the UAE leg.
Unfortunately for Kohli fans, the RCB skipper couldn’t do much and got out after scoring five off four balls. Although the batter is gone, KKR bowlers can’t afford to breathe easy by any means. After all, dashers like AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell can torment the best of bowlers.
Meanwhile, RCB enjoyed a sensational run in the first half of IPL 2021. Having won five of their first seven games, the side was third in the team standings at the time of season suspension. Hence, it would be interesting to see how the Bangalore-based side performs in the Arab nation.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Virat Kohli’s failure:
