Numbers prove MS Dhoni is more successful as captain than Rohit Sharma in IPL

The Chennai Super Kings lifted the IPL 2018 title after their thumping win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. They entered the record books as only the second team to win the IPL title on three occasions. The form and the consistency of the Chennai Super Kings has been phenomenal. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, they have made it to the playoffs of each and every edition of the IPL they have participated in.
MS Dhoni has guided the Men in Yellow to three title wins thus far and is looking good for more. Interestingly, even the Mumbai Indians have won the IPL title thrice. And on all those three occasions, the team has been successfully led by Rohit Sharma.
So by the look of things, one would assume that both Dhoni and Rohit are at the same level when it comes to the success rate in the IPL. Well, from the outlook and the end results, yes! However, when seen on a microscopic level, the CSK skipper has an upper hand in this race.
Till date, MS Dhoni has led the Chennai Super Kings in 168 matches. The team has managed to win 103 out of those game and has lost in 63 outings. There has been one tied game under Dhoni’s leadership and there has been only one washed out affair. Hence, after all the calculations, the win percentage of Dhoni in the IPL is as high as 61.97.
Rohit’s numbers as the captain of MI
While Dhoni has been with the Super Kings since the very first edition of the tournament, the Mumbai Indians is the second franchise for Rohit Sharma. Rohit was previously associated with the Deccan Chargers that had won the IPL in 2009. For the Mumbai Indians, Rohit took over the captaincy in 2013 and ended up winning it in that season.
MI have played 6 seasons under Rohit’s captaincy and have won three out of those. In 2014, they qualified for the playoffs but failed to make it to the finals. And in 2016 and 2018, they failed to make it to the playoffs. In all, he has led MI in 94 matches and has won in 55 of those. He has lost 38 matches as a captain and one match had a tied result. Rohit’s winning percentage as captain is 59.04%.
