India batter Shreyas Iyer starred in the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka. India whitewashed the visitors in the three-match series and also stretched their unbeaten run in the format to 12 matches. Iyer once again won the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten half-century. He also won the Player of the Series award for amassing 204 runs at a strike-rate of 174.36 with three half-centuries. He wasn’t dismissed in any of the three games as well.
Shreyas Iyer batted at number three throughout the series and has revealed that the batting position is his favourite especially in the shortest format of the game. He reckons that the batters in the top three get time to pace their innings properly in T20s and one doesn’t get enough time while batting lower down the order.
“Obviously in this format, top-three is the only place where you can pace your innings pretty well. Otherwise if you bat down the order you can’t give yourself time you need to start going from ball one. So yeah, if I had to say the best number to bat for me personally, it’s obviously No. 3,” he said according to Times Now.
I like to finish off the game, says Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer is not the preferred option as of now in India’s playing XI in the T20Is. The fact that the likes of Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav didn’t feature in this series led to him getting a chance. However, with this kind of performance, he has definitely increased the headache for the team management now. Even he understands the dynamics of the team and also acknowledged that the competition is immense at the moment.
““I’m not keeping any expectations from myself nor from the team coaches because if you see the competition in our team, it’s immense. Every individual is capable of winning you games. Personally I want to enjoy each and every moment and opportunity, which I’ve been provided with. I like to finish off the games and that’s like my mindset whenever I go onto the pitch,” Iyer further said.
