Ollie Robinson suspended from all forms of international cricket
Robinson won't be a part of the second Test against New Zealand, starting Thursday at the Edgbaston.
England all-rounder Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all forms of international cricket pending the decision made after a disciplinary investigation following his historic tweets back in 2012 and 2013.
On Sunday, June 6, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that he will leave the national camp on an immediate basis and will return to Sussex. Hence, he won’t be a part of the second Test against New Zealand, starting Thursday, June 10 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Earlier, Robinson admitted to dropping the “racist and sexist” tweets while being a teenager where he took jibes at the Muslim community and people of Asian ethnicity. The development came to the fore after he took the field for the opening Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Once the tweets emerged, the ECB also promised to make an investigation. After play on Wednesday, Robinson issued an apology, stating that he’s embarrassed by his actions and he’s neither sexist nor racist.
Root opines on Ollie Robinson
In the meantime, Joe Root, the Three Lions’ Test skipper, lauded Robinson for an outstanding debut at the Home of Cricket, but the captain also said that his historic actions were “unacceptable”.
“He’s contributed well with the bat, his performance with the ball was excellent. He’s showed high levels of skill and he’s definitely got the game that can be successful in Test cricket. But in regards to the stuff that’s happened off the field, it’s not acceptable within our game. We all know that.
“He addressed the dressing room straight away. He obviously spoke to you guys and other media outlets straight away, fronted up to it. He showed a lot of remorse from that point onwards. You can see it’s very genuine from how he’s been around the group and the team,” Root was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.
“I couldn’t believe them personally. I didn’t really know how to take it on the surface. I think the most important thing is Ollie is part of this dressing room and we had to support him,” Root added.
In the first Test, Robinson took four wickets in the first innings followed by three in the second. He also scored 42 in England’s first innings.
